Sailing on the Largest Ship in the World: My Icon of the Seas Experience
When Royal Caribbean announced the launch of Icon of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world, I knew I had to experience it firsthand. As a family of five, we embarked on a 7-night Western Caribbean adventure from Miami, stopping in Roatan, Cozumel, Costa Maya, and Perfect Day at CocoCay. We stayed in two balcony staterooms on Deck 12, providing us with comfort, space, and breathtaking ocean views throughout the journey.
First Impressions of Icon of the Seas
Stepping onto Icon of the Seas was an experience in itself. The sheer size of the ship was overwhelming—in the best possible way. Spanning 20 decks and carrying over 7,000 passengers, the ship is a floating city packed with cutting-edge amenities, world-class dining, and jaw-dropping entertainment. The embarkation process in Miami was smooth, and within no time, we were sipping welcome drinks, exploring the ship, and soaking in the excitement of our upcoming adventure.
Our Balcony Staterooms on Deck 12
With a family of five, having two balcony staterooms was a fantastic choice. The rooms were modern, spacious, and thoughtfully designed. The highlight? Waking up to the sunrise over the ocean and enjoying coffee on the balcony before heading out for the day’s activities. The ample storage, cozy bedding, and well-appointed bathrooms made our stay incredibly comfortable.
Exploring the Ship’s Iconic Features
Thrill Island & The Largest Water Park at Sea
One of the first places we checked out was Thrill Island, home to Category 6, the largest water park at sea. With six record-breaking waterslides, including the terrifying Frightening Bolt, there was no shortage of adrenaline-pumping fun. The kids (and let’s be honest, the adults too!) couldn’t get enough of these slides.
Chill Island & The Swim-Up Bar
For a more relaxed vibe, Chill Island was the perfect retreat. We lounged by the Cove Pool, one of the ship’s seven pools, and enjoyed drinks at the Swim & Tonic swim-up bar. The infinity-edge Royal Bay pool provided the most breathtaking views and a perfect place to unwind.
AquaDome & Showstopping Entertainment
The AquaDome, a brand-new concept for Royal Caribbean, was an incredible venue. We watched Aqua Action!, an edge-of-your-seat high-diving and acrobatics show that left us in awe. The Absolute Zero Ice Skating Show was another highlight, showcasing world-class performances that made us forget we were in the middle of the ocean.
Dining: A Culinary Journey
Icon of the Seas takes cruise dining to a whole new level with over 40 dining venues. Some of our favorite dining experiences included:
Empire Supper Club – A luxurious, 8-course fine dining experience.
Izumi Hibachi & Sushi – Fresh sushi and interactive hibachi dining that entertained the whole family.
Windjammer Marketplace – The buffet had an incredible selection, perfect for quick and easy meals.
Pearl Café – A 24-hour grab-and-go café with delicious snacks and drinks.
Our Western Caribbean Itinerary
Roatan, Honduras
Roatan welcomed us with stunning beaches and vibrant marine life. We booked a private snorkeling excursion, exploring the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest coral reef in the world. The crystal-clear waters and colorful fish made for an unforgettable experience.
Cozumel, Mexico
Cozumel was a mix of adventure and culture. We visited the San Gervasio Mayan Ruins, learned about the island’s history, and then headed to a beach club for a day of relaxation. The local cuisine, especially the fresh ceviche, was a must-try.
Costa Maya, Mexico
Costa Maya offered a laid-back vibe. We spent the day at Maya Chan Beach Resort, where we lounged in hammocks, sipped tropical cocktails, and enjoyed the warm Caribbean waters. It was the perfect mid-cruise relaxation spot.
Perfect Day at CocoCay
Saving the best for last, Perfect Day at CocoCay was just that—perfect! From the thrills of Daredevil’s Peak, the tallest waterslide in North America, to the serene beaches of Chill Island, there was something for everyone. The kids loved the Oasis Lagoon, the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean, while we relaxed in a floating cabana at the Coco Beach Club.
Final Thoughts: Is Icon of the Seas Worth It?
Absolutely! Icon of the Seas is a game-changer in the world of cruising. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, top-tier entertainment, or world-class dining, this ship has it all. Our family of five had an unforgettable week filled with once-in-a-lifetime experiences. If you’re considering a Royal Caribbean cruise, Icon of the Seas should be at the top of your list!
